GARDAI are questioning four men and three women about the robbery and imprisonment of the Co Tipperary family who narrowly escaped suffocation after they were locked for 17 hours in a shed.

Gardai suspect the family were targeted by a former priest thought to have hired the murderers of Tipperary farmer, Mr Danny Fanning.

This man is not one of the four being questioned.

Two Dublin men, Ivor Sweetman (46), of Tallaght, Dublin, and Francis Palmer (26), of Lucan, Co Dublin, were convicted of Mr Fanning's murder on Tuesday and sentenced to life imprisonment.

The seven arrested yesterday were being questioned by gardai last night in Cahir, Clonmel and Tipperary Garda stations about the aggravated burglary at the Britton family home near Fethard, Co Tipperary, at the weekend.

The seven, all connected to criminal families, were arrested yesterday in a series of raids in west Dublin.

A van used in the raid on the Britton home was abandoned in Ballyfermot at the weekend.

The Britton family were locked in a small, airless shed by the raiders on Saturday night who stole £10,000 in cash and a large quantity of cigarettes.

Their three children, aged 13, 10 and seven suffered badly during their ordeal. Mr Frank Britton said the children suffered sickness and vomiting and drifted in and out of sleep during the ordeal.

Although the man suspected of setting up the crime has been questioned on many occasions he has not been charged in connection with major offences.
