Seven people were killed when a residential building collapsed today in the historic Islamic quarter of Cairo.

Rescue workers pulled seven corpses from the rubble in the Darb el-Ahmar area. An eighth person was rescued, suffering from moderate to severe fractures, Egypt's official Middle East News Agency reported.

Prosecutors were informed so an investigation could be carried out immediately, it said.

Building collapses are common in Egypt because of lax building standards and poor maintenance. At least six people were killed earlier this month when a four-storey residential building collapsed in Cairo's Shubra neighbourhood.
