The services maintained its buoyant recovery in February as a number of firms reported a rise in new orders, the latest industry survey showed today.

The NCB Purchasing Managers' Service Index, a lead indicator of activity in the services sector, reported positive growth for the ninth month in succession.

The index recorded a reading of 57 for February - any reading above 50 indicates expansion.

Service providers reported a rise in new business enquiries and said backlogs were lengthening suggesting an increasing need for staff.

The survey covers all private sector services in Ireland, excluding retail and wholesale. The data are derived from questionnaires sent to a panel of around 600 Irish private services companies that
