Fire services in the North have brought a serious gorse fire near Omagh in Co Tyrone under control

Fire services in the North have brought a serious gorse fire near Omagh in Co Tyrone under control. The blaze started at around 1 a.m.

An RUC spokesman said 15 fire engines were called in to tackle the blaze at Baroney Road near the Creggan crossroad. A two-mile stretch of the Creggan-to-Greencastle road which was closed is now open.

Residents from several homes in the area were evacuated as firefighters fought to control the blaze.
