Edinburgh - A Church of Scotland minister convicted of terrifying his congregation by faking his own execution received a standing ovation from his parishioners yesterday.

The Rev Earlsley White (69) took the morning service at Park parish church in Uddingston, Lanarkshire, where a year ago he arranged for his mock abduction and assassination as part of his service to make a point about terrorism. As the service began, the congregation broke into applause and within moments were all on their feet, many of them in tears. White was found guilty last week after a trial at Hamilton sheriff court.
