The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) is investigating an explosion on the outskirts of Tralee yesterday afternoon in which a number of houses were damaged.

A spokesman for the HSA said this morning that  there was no indication as to the cause of the explosion which happened at Ballycarthy Cross yesterday around 4 p.m. yesterday but that an inspector was at the site and was likely to be there for most of the day.

There were no injuries from the explosion, which followed a planned explosion used to clear rocks from the path of a new road into the town.

Work at the site has been going on for the past two weeks where several blasts have already taken place.

Some workmen at the site were taken to hospital following the blast but all have been released -apparently uninjured. Work has been halted until the investigation is complete.
