Hurling without a handguard causes a substantial number of fractures, research presented at yesterday's Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland research day suggests.

Researchers at Waterford Regional Hospital found that 97 per cent of patients with hand fractures had acquired them while hurling. Only one patient had been wearing a handguard.
