Rescue work halts at German ice rink

Rescue workers have called a halt to their search

Rescuers have postponed their search for survivors feared trapped under the wreckage of a collapsed ice rink roof that has killed up to 15 people in Bavaria amid fears of a further collapse.

An expert survey showed "that it would be irresponsible for more rescue workers to go in," said a local councillor for the region that includes the Alpine town of Bad Reichenhall.

Four people are still missing following yesterday's roof collapse - a woman and three children between the ages of 12 and 16, officials said.

Rescuers are awaiting the arrival of more heavy equipment later this evening and hope the rescue operation would resume by dawn tomorrow.

Schools in the region were on holiday, and many children and their parents were inside the building in the Bavarian town of Bad Reichenhall, near the Austrian border, when the roof, weighed down by masses of snow, fell in yesterday.

By early afternoon rescuers had recovered the bodies of 11 people, including a woman, two teenagers and six children aged between nine and 12, all from the local area.

Three other people, known to be holidaying in the area, were unaccounted for; it was not clear whether they had been at the rink.

Thirteen others, among 50 who were in the building when it collapsed, are being treated in hospital.
