A YOUNG man detained by gardai in Dundalk earlier this week did not return to hospital after being released from custody on Wednesday evening and is not thought to have returned to his home in Co Tyrone.

It is understood the youth, aged 18, was admitted to Louth County Hospital last Thursday giving a Dundalk address. On being discharged on Tuesday evening he was arrested under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act on suspicion of being a member of the IRA. He was released without charge about 24 hours later.

Gardai made inquiries in hospitals in Louth, Meath and Monaghan after being contacted by the RUC about a young man who may have suffered an injury.

It has been reported that the man arrested in Dundalk had suffered a shrapnel or gunshot wound in an incident outside Coalisland police station last week. However, it has not been confirmed that the man detained had suffered such a wound, although he is believed to have had a minor groin injury.
