The rector of the Irish College in Rome Fr Ciarán O’Carroll has been appointed chaplain to Pope Benedict XVI which promotes him to the rank of monsignor, Archbishop Diarmuid Martin has announced.

Msgr O’Carroll was appointed rector of the Irish College last September. He had been vicar for evangelisation in, and administrator of, the Catholic University Church on St Stephen’s Green. Previously he had lectured in ecclesiastical history at Clonliffe College, Dublin, and St Patrick’s College, Maynooth.

He also served as secretary to the Council of Priests, as chairman of the Dublin diocesan Trócaire working group and was a member both of the diocesan council and the board of the 50th International Eucharistic Congress in Ireland 2012.
