Freetown - Rebels in Sierra Leone attacked UN positions and clashed with government troops north-east of the capital, Freetown, as hundreds of British troops began leaving the city, UN and military sources said yesterday.

Around 200 rebels attacked a position held by Jordanian UN peacekeepers at Rokel Bridge on Monday, about 60 km north-east of the capital, a UN spokeswoman said. The UN repulsed three attempts by units of the rebel Revolutionary United Front (RUF) to infiltrate from the north by crossing the Rokel River, the spokeswoman said.
