A seventeen-year-old boy had a miraculous escape from India's devastating earthquake, surviving for eight days in a village well into which he had fallen, witnesses said today.

The youth, Arjun Bhai, was found yesterday by neighbours and pulled out unscathed in the village of Sikaravadi, 13 km (eight miles) from Bachchau, the boy's neighbour, Usha Ben, told reporters.

"We discovered he was in there when he started throwing stones", she said.

"He thought it (the earthquake) was a bomb and ran into a shed by the well and the shed fell into the well", she said.
