Four people are being questioned by police today about the murder of a Scotsman who was beaten up and thrown under the wheels of a car in Northern Ireland.

A fifth man arrested over the murder in Tobermore, Co Derry, early on Saturday morning has been released without charge on police bail.

Ronald Mackie (36), from Kippen, Stirlingshire, was attacked by a mob after a row flared during a disco at Tobermore United Football Club. He was a frequent visitor to Tobermore and had travelled to Northern Ireland to attend a band parade in nearby Maghera on Friday night.

The Maghera Sons of William Flute Band last night issued a statement urging anyone with information about the murder to go to the police.

Detectives investigating the murder do not suspect a sectarian motive, but police said they had not ruled out loyalist involvement.

Police are searching for the driver of a red car that struck Mr Mackie. It is understood to have stopped after running over Mr Mackie but then sped away.
