At a protest outside the Nigerian embassy, Dublin, yesterday respect for human rights and environmental issues in Ogoni and the Niger Delta was demanded of the military government and the oil industry. A letter was handed in outlining nine demands aimed at the restoration of democracy, writes David Shanks. Nine black wreaths were laid in memory of the poet and environmentalist, Ken Saro-Wiwa, on the third anniversary of his execution. The letter called for the release of his remains and those of his companions "for a dignified burial by their families".
The protesters included Mr Pat Rabbitte of Democratic Left, Evelyn Conlon, the writer, representatives of Amnesty International, Trocaire and other organisations. OSI is holding its annual Ken Saro-Wiwa seminar on Saturday at Belvedere College, Dublin, from 10.30 a.m.
