Gardai in Ballinasloe, Co Galway, are awaiting the results of a post-mortem before initiating a murder investigation into the death of an 83-year-old man following an assault. Mr Tom Kelly, of Cluain Buaile, Ballydangan, died on Wednesday, almost two months after the attack.

Mr Kelly had been found, tied to his bed and badly beaten, by a neighbour about 12 hours after the assault in his home on March 26th.

Mr Kelly died at the Sacred Heart Nursing Home, where he had been transferred to following his release from Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe.
