Portugal coach Antonio Oliveira has been sacked following the country’s poor showing in the World Cup finals.

Portugal failed to qualify from Group D which included South Korea, USA and Poland.

FPF president Gilberto Madail said Oliveira no longer fulfilled the criteria needed to carry on as manager.

Madail said a fax had been sent to Oliveira today to tell him the news. His contract was due to run till the 2004 European championships in Portugal.

Oliveira will be paid 400,000 euros in compensation, according to media reports in Portugal.

On Friday, Oliveira said that he would not be resigning and added the FPF would have to make a decision on his fate.
