REV PROF Eamonn Conway has been appointed by Pope Benedict to be a theological adviser at the synod of bishops in Rome next month. Fr Conway is head of theology and religious studies at Mary Immaculate College, University of Limerick. He is from Tuam, Co Galway, and a priest of Tuam archdiocese. He celebrated his silver jubilee this year.

He studied philosophy and sociology at NUI Maynooth as well as theology at St Patrick’s College and at the University of Tuebingen in Germany. In 1991 he was awarded a doctorate in theology and then taught systematic theology at All Hallows in Dublin.

He was appointed head of theology and religious studies at Mary Immaculate College in 1999, and he became co-director of the centre for culture, technology and values in 2000. From 2009 to 2011 he was president of the European Society for Catholic Theology and in 2011 was elected president of the International Network of Societies for Catholic Theology. He served on government advisory bodies including the Information Society Commission, E-Futures and E-Learning committees and the Futures Ireland advisory panel of the National Economic and Social Development Office.
