The Government has started an information campaign on the phase-out of leaded petrol, which has been made illegal by an EU directive.
The fuel is still available at most petrol stations but will no longer be sold after January 1st, 2000.
Most cars manufactured since 1986 are designed to run on unleaded petrol.
The change was introduced to reduce the amount of lead pollution in the air, particularly in urban areas.
