AN off-duty RUC man was shot dead in a Belfast bar last night by two men using handguns.

The men entered the Parliament Bar in the docks area of the city at around 10 p.m., singled the man out and, according to witnesses, fired four shots at close range. The policeman died at the scene a short time later.

A car believed to have been used by the gunmen was found burnt out in west Belfast.

The bar is a well-known gay venue.

The former SDLP MP for West Belfast, Mr Joe Hendron, said the shooting was "shocking, cold blooded" and "presumably committed by some kind of republican faction".
