The Former Progressive Democrats leader has this evening warned against returning Fianna Fail with an overall majority in the next general election.

Mr Des O’Malley said: "This is coalition country now and I trust that it’s going to stay that way. We have a well-informed and sophisticated electorate in this country. And I urge them not to take risks with the running of the country".

He was speaking at the Association of European Journalists lunch in Dublin this afternoon.

And he touched on another subject close to his heart during his more than 30 year political career - the Provisional IRA.

Mr O’Malley said that the Provisionals’ activities in the north were well known. "Let us not forget about their activities down here. Banks were robbed. People were kidnapped. Soldiers and Gardai were murdered."

He added: "The Provisionals are still with us. Instead of wrecking our democracy they are now going to reform it for us. God help us." He concluded his speech by saying he remained very optimistic about the future of Ireland.
