O’Leary slams managers' get-out clause

Leeds boss David O'Leary has criticised the get-out clause that allowed Glenn Hoddle to leave Southampton for Spurs.

O'Leary has called for binding deals with clubs that would see managers honour their contracts.

In his Sunday Peoplecolumn, he said: "Glenn Hoddle is back where most people think he belong because of a get-out clause that should have no place in football.

"My long-term contract with Leeds has no such release agreement. I don't like them, they aren't right," O’Leary said.

"How can a club plan ahead if the manager is waiting for a better offer? We're going to reach the situation where nobody will respect clubs or managers for the way they conduct themselves.

"We need binding agreements between both parties. If clubs want to get rid of their manager, they should pay up contracts on the spot and, in return, managers should honour their deals," he said.
