Sackville extended his winning sequence to eight when justifying odds-on favouritism in a tremendous race with Limestone Lad for the Powers Gold Cup at Fairyhouse today.

Jumping well for regular rider David Casey, Sackville was pressed all the way in the last mile by Limestone Lad who, however, did not take the fences with the same fluency though travelling well in between.

Turning into the home straight Sackville had come up to dispute the lead with the runner-up, and although Limestone Lad showed in front again between the last two fences, a couple of reminders from Casey got the favourite into top gear. They flew the last fence and the issue was decided as Limestone Lad delayed a fraction too long in the air to keep tabs on the winner.

Alcapone who like Sackville had won at Fairyhouse last week ran on well without threatening the principals to be a creditable third.

Bookmakers Paddy Power quote Sackville at 14-1 for the Tote Cheltenham Gold Cup next March, with rival firm Cashmans happy to leave the horse at 16-1.

"I am delighted that he has won eight on the bounce and we have a lot to look forward to with him next season," said winning trainer Frances Crowley.

Casey added: "It was tougher today over the shorter trip on this ground, but Sackville always gives you the right response when you want it because he is so easy to settle and loves his racing." PA
