Exports to non-EU countries fell by 3 per cent last year and imports fell by 6 per cent, according to figures today from the Central Statistics Office (CSO).

The CSO warned that data for 2002 has been influenced by changes in the location of international distribution centres.

It said this has resulted in a shift in trade from non-EU countries to EU countries. This is particularly the case in the chemicals sector.

The seasonally adjusted exports fell marginally to €2.5 billion in December 2002 compared to the November value of €2.57 billion. Imports increased to €1.5 billion from €1.4 billion in the month.
