RTE has refused to apologise to the Fianna Fail TD, Ms Beverley Cooper-Flynn, for allegations about her which were broadcast by the station.

Ms Cooper-Flynn, who instructed her lawyers to initiate proceedings against RTE and the source of the allegations, Mr James Howard, had demanded that reporter Charlie Bird read a personal apology to her on yesterday's 6 p.m. television news.

However, it is understood that RTE's response to Ms Cooper-Flynn's solicitors included confirmation that there would not be an apology to their client. No regrets were issued on the news and the station has no plans to broadcast any apology to Ms Cooper-Flynn.

Mr Howard, the retired Co Meath farmer who alleged that she introduced him to NIB's Clerical Medical Insurance product as a means of evading tax, has said that he will continue to stand over his story. A spokesman for Mr Howard has denied that he would mix Ms Cooper-Flynn up with another NIB employee, Ms Patricia Roche.
