A group of medical experts are to investigate sudden cardiac death in young people, the NI health minister said tonight.

Chief Medical Officer Michael McBride will lead the group after two young GAA players dropped dead while training in Tyrone this month.

Minister Michael McGimpsey made the announcement after listening to an Assembly debate on a screening service.

"We want to get this right and I think this is the proper tribute the Assembly should pay to our children who have lost their lives so young in such a terrible way," he told the Stormont chamber.

He added there would be cardiac, genetic and psychological medics as well as sporting and voluntary sector representatives.

Earlier this month four teenagers from across Ireland died from the condition within a week.

Patrick Devlin, 13, from Ardboe, Tyrone, collapsed during a Gaelic football training session on Saturday morning.

A defibrillator was used at the scene to try to revive him but he was later declared dead at Craigavon Hospital.

Patrick Breen, 10, from Dregish near Drumquin, Tyrone, died during a GAA training session on Tuesday.

There were two other cases in Westmeath. Mr McGimpsey warned it would take 200,000 checks to identify one case and added that there was no effective treatment or preventative measure.
