Abuja - Nigeria's new national assembly opened yesterday, ending more than 15 years of law-making by military decree in Africa's most populous nation.

The election of Mr Evan Enwerem as influential speaker of the 109-member Senate brought to an end days of political wrangling which has divided new President Olusegun Obasanjo and his deputy, Mr Abubakar Atiku, both of whom were sworn in at the weekend.
