The Department of the Marine has confirmed an Irish registered fishing vessel has been detained for allegedly exceeding monthly fishing quotas.

The Westerleawas arrested by the LE Niamhan estimated 60 miles off the west coast of the Blasket Islands.

The ship has been escorted to Fenit Harbour in Co Kerry for legal proceedings.

This is the sixth such detention by the Naval Service in 2003.
