A WEEK commemorating the Chernobyl disaster was launched yesterday in a bid to highlight the plight of thousands living in the aftermath of the catastrophe.

One of four reactors exploded at the power station in 1986 in the world’s worst nuclear accident.

The Chernobyl Children’s Project International fundraising week aims to remember those living with deprivation as a result of the calamity.

It is hoped the nationwide campaign will also raise awareness of the charity’s programmes assisting children and communities in Belarus, Ukraine and western Russia.

Charity founder Adi Roche said: “After 23 years, the legacy of Chernobyl remains imprinted on the lives of the children and families.”

The charity aims to raise more than €1 million to develop medical and nursing programmes, community development projects and “homes of hope” projects.

A Babushka doll pin will be sold during the week, which runs until April 27th.
