Golf - Open qualifiers:Glasson golfer Colm Moriarty has added his name to the list of Irish golfers to contest the The Open at St Andrews next week.

The former Irish Amateur International will join Pádraig Harrington, Shane Lowry, Rory McIlroy, Graeme McDowell and Gareth Maybin at the famous course after topping the leaderboard in the qualifier at Kingsbarns on a score of seven under after two rounds.

Five birdies and an eagle saw him take control after round one with a 67 and he added a 70 to that total in the second round of the day to top a field of 72 players, three ahead of the chasing pack.

Cian McNamara carded a 76 and 71 at the same course.

David Higgins of Waterville looked at one stage looked to be on course to make it at Scotscraig.

He opened with a 66 but then carded a 73 to drop to two strokes outside the qualifying mark.

At Fairmont, Patrick Devine of Royal Dublin and Limerick’s Tim Rice also fell short with aggregates of 148 and 149 respectively.

Killarney’s Daniel Sugrue shot 71 and 74 at Ladybank for a share of 31st.
