THE Dublin criminal known as the Monk was being questioned in a Garda station in north inner Dublin last night in connection with an investigation of threats made to gardai.
He was arrested at about 8.30 a.m. yesterday at his home in Clontarf.
He was being held at Fitzgibbon Street station under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act, which allows for detention for up to 48 hours.
The Monk (34) recently returned from holidays abroad. But the investigation began while he was away, after gardai based in the station were threatened by two men alleged to be his associates. One is understood to be a relative of the Monk.
Gardai had been keeping the two men under "close surveillance" and had been sitting near them in an inner city pub when the men approached.
They are believed to have threatened physical injury, and to have added that because the Monk was away there was no prospect of him being connected with any incident.
The Monk had previously been arrested and questioned in connection with the £2.8 million robbery at a Brink's Allied depot in Dublin in January of last year.
