Mitchell to unleash full strength All Blacks

New Zealand will hit Italy with their strongest available side in Saturday's World Cup clash in Melbourne.

New Zealand will hit Italy with their strongest available side in Saturday's World Cup clash in Melbourne.

All Blacks coach John Mitchell today announced only two enforced changes to the side which beat Australia and claimed the Bledisloe Cup in August.

Lock Ali Williams travelled with the squad into Melbourne this evening but is out with a fractured foot, while Aaron Mauger is sidelined with a groin strain.

As a result, former rugby league star Brad Thorn will start alongside Chris Jack in the second row and his Canterbury team-mate Daniel Carter will start at inside centre.

Mitchell refuted suggestions it was the All Black 'A-team' and revealed he plans to use all 30 members of the squad during the pool matches.

"We don't have a top line-up," he said. "We have faith in everyone and will prepare the way we have prepared all year.

"We would like to play everyone in our squad. We have a plan in place, with four combinations we have spoken about."

Mitchell is confident Williams, who was only passed fit to travel this morning, will feature at some stage in the All Blacks' pool games.

Norm Maxwell is on standby for a call-up as Mitchell opted for only three specialist locks in his squad.

Captain and blind-side flanker Reuben Thorne will deputise in the second row during the Italy game if need be.

Mitchell straight-batted any questions looking further ahead than the game against Italy at the Telstra Dome on Saturday, which he expects to be a tough, physical encounter with a side coached by All Blacks legend John Kirwan.

The two sides met in Hamilton only last year, with the All Blacks running out comfortable 64-10 winners.

The New Zealand squad were given a rousing reception into Australia by over 1,000 fans gathered at Melbourne airport, easily the largest welcoming committee of all the sides flying in.
