The army set up five armed incursions into areas under the fullcontrol of Mr Yasser Arafat's self-rule authority despite Israelsaying it would not carry out such operations under the terms of itsceasefire.

In one raid Palestinian security and medical sources said 20civilians, including five children, were wounded by shrapnel and bullets when the army fired shells on the Yebna refugee camp near Rafah on the border with Egypt.

Security sources also reported another armed raid into avillage east of Khan Yunis in the southern Gaza Strip with tanksmoving insome 250 metresinto autonomous land underfire.
