Software giant Microsoft - which had some of its websites hacked into last week - has hired Akamai Technologies to guard against hackers, the Wall Street Journalsaid today.

Microsoft's sites were hacked into last Thursday and Friday with denial of service attacks. These send millions of electronic messages in an attempt to tie up equipment and prevent Internet users from accessing websites.

Microsoft shares closed at $64 in Friday trading on the Nasdaq - below a 52-week high of $115.

Akamai shares finished on Friday at $29 below their 12-month high of $305.
