Michael Collins is in third place in a Person of the Century online poll on Times 2000, a millennium eve countdown site published as part of the Irish Times website, ireland.com
The republican leader is trailing Mr Nelson Mandela and Mother Teresa of Calcutta, but is the clear leader in the Irish Person of the Century poll, ahead of Eamon de Valera and Mr John Hume.
But the race is still wide open, with the virtual polling booth due to remain active until mid-January, after which the results will be published at Times 2000 and in The Irish Times.
The 20 poll topics include such usual suspects as Writer, Singer, Actor, Thinker, Sports man/woman, Movie, Book and Album as well as some less conventional subjects: Word of the Century, Kitchen Appliance of the Century and Worst Idea of the Century. Over 1,000 votes per day have been cast since Times 2000 was opened last week.
The site also features an interactive version of The Irish Times Book of the Century, with articles from the newspaper, detailed timelines and a review of the century by Fintan O'Toole. The articles are complemented by several hundred newsreel and TV clips covering the major Irish and international events of the century.
Visitors to the site can debate their poll choices in a discussion forum and test their knowledge in an online quiz.
The site carries video footage of the ringing of Christ Church bells, as well as a 13-minute audio clip of the bells tolling as they will on December 31st.
Times 2000 also carries daily updated news of millennium eve celebration plans from around the world, a guide to millennium countdown websites and an electronic greeting card service.
