Meteor rings up profits for Eircom

Although revenues from Eircom's fixed line businesses grew by just 1 per cent to €833 million, revenues from Meteor, Eircom's mobile phone unit, increased 30 per cent to €238 million on the back of subscriber growth and increased average revenue per user.

Stripping out EBITDA, group earnings were €346 million - up 7 per cent on the corresponding period in 2006.

Eircom said the number of mobile subscribers rose by 20 per cent to 962,000 over the second half of 2007.

CEO Rex Comb said the company was continuing to invest in DSL broadband and mobile infrastructure and had allocated €157 million to those projects in the last half year.

Mr Comb said Eircom planned to cut its workforce by 900 over the next two years, under the company's "voluntary leaver programme". Eircom employs 6,791 people, with a further 800 staff working for Meteor.
