Minister for Transport, Mr Seamus Brennan, today unveiled a memorial to Countess Constance Markievicz in Rathcormac, County Sligo.
The minister said the Countess was "a remarkable woman and one of the outstanding social and historical figures in our history".
He said: "Her contribution to the influencing and moulding of the emerging new Ireland was considerable and we owe her a debt of gratitude for that."
The sculpture by artist John Coll depicts a bronze figure on a stone plinth with stainless steel gates.
The location of the memorial was chosen because of its proximity to her family home at Lissadell and to where she made her first public speech in nearby Drumcliff.
Countess Markievicz fought in the 1916 Rising and was the first woman to be elected to a British Parliament.
