Ireland should think carefully before introducing mandatory reporting of child neglect and abuse, a seminar on the effects of child neglect was told yesterday.

Associate professor Leah Bromfield, deputy director of the Australian Centre for Child Protection at the University of South Australia, warned that the introduction of mandatory reporting could result in child protection services becoming overwhelmed. This could lead to children not getting the services they needed, she told a TCD seminar.
