Gardaí arrested a man in Dublin last night after he was found carrying a AK-47 assault rifle.
The man (22) was stopped by plain-clothed gardaí on Camden Street at around 9pm.
The officers discovered the rifle and two magazines, one of which was full, in a bag his was carrying.
He was arrested and taken to Harcourt Terrace Garda station.
Garda Commissioner Fachtna Murphy, who took over as head of the force this week, said: "It gives me great pleasure this morning to be able to say that we took an AK-47 and ammunition off the streets of our country.
"My whole focus will be to make the streets safer and that's were I'll be focusing my resources."
