Twenty members of the Kerry Mountain Rescue team made their way to top of Mount Brandon in Co Kerry last night in an attempt to rescue a man who suffered a cardiac arrest near the summit.

As cloud cover was so thick Kerry Mountain Rescue and the Dingle Coastguard took several hours to reach him.

ESB repairs lines hit by lightning

Over 10,000 homes across the State were without electricity for a few hours last night after lightning hit power lines.

The power was blacked out in Co Cavan and Co Mayo, south Donegal, and part of Tipperary.

ESB repair crews were immediately sent out to the affected areas.

An ESB spokesman said last night that the lightening had hit the electricity power lines and the fuses had tripped due to the overload.

He said that they expected all power to be restored to the homes before midnight last night.

Garda appeal after man is assaulted

A man in his 50s was seriously injured when he was attacked by two men off Dublin's Camden Street.

Gardaí have appealed for witnesses to the assault at Camden Place, a laneway between Camden and Harcourt Street to come forward.

The attack took place shortly after 9 p.m. on Sunday. The injured man was taken to St James's Hospital.

Gardaí said the attackers were believed to be in their early 20s with one wearing a white top and the other assailant a blue top.

PSNI defend use of CS spray

The PSNI have dismissed a claim by Sinn Féin that the police are using Derry "as a laboratory training ground" for the use of the controversial CS incapacitant spray.

It follows confirmation that police officers used the spray twice in Derry over last weekend.

Sinn Féin accused the police of "using Derry as a laboratory training ground for new devices" but a PSNI spokesman said the police "had no option" but to use the spray twice last weekend.

Woman wins angling contest

A woman has won the World Cup Trout Fly Angling world championships for the first time since its inception in 1953, writes Derek Evans, Angling Correspondent.

Ms Julie Gerry from Maynooth, Co Kildare, won the contest on Lough Mask, Co Mayo yesterday.

Originally from Kent in England Julie moved to Ireland four years ago and is currently manager of Maynooth Fisheries in Co Kildare.
