A man was found shot dead at the wheel of a car after police were called to a head-on road accident in Merseyside, a police spokesman said today.

The 35-year-old victim was shot in the head and died at the scene of the crash in the Halewood area south of Liverpool.

He was driving a gold Land Rover that veered onto the wrong side of the road and collided with a silver Ford Focus at 9.15pm on Saturday.

The driver of the Ford, a 36-year-old man, suffered whiplash and minor injuries in the crash.

Police said the motive for the attack was unclear and they did not know who shot the Land Rover driver, who lives locally. No more details of the incident were released.

Officers are checking CCTV footage, making house-to-house inquiries and conducting forensic tests at the scene.

"We are carrying out extensive enquiries to build up a picture of events leading up to this incident," said Detective Chief Inspector Mark Wadmore of Merseyside Police.

"It is imperative that we find those responsible for this man's death and I would urge any witnesses to speak to police."

In a second incident, a 21-year-old man was shot in the leg on Saturday at a house in Kensington, east of Liverpool city centre. He was taken to hospital where his injuries were described as "not life-threatening".
