Four Islamic militants have been convicted of the kidnapping and murder of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl.

Four Islamic militants have been convicted of the kidnapping and murder of Wall Street Journalreporter Daniel Pearl.

The chief defendant, British-born Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh, was sentenced to death, deputy defence lawyer Mr Mohsin Imam said.

The three others were sentenced to 25 years imprisonment.

The verdict was handed down by Judge Ali Ashraf Shah in the heavily guarded jail in Hyderabad where the trial was held.

The defence says the verdict will be appealed.

The four defendants - who also included Salman Saqib, Fahad Naseem and Shaikh Adil - were collectively fined 2 million rupees (£26,440).

Chief prosecutor Mr Raja Quereshi says the money will go to Pearl's widow Mariane and their infant son, who was born after his father was killed.

In New York, Mr Steven Goldstein, vice-president of the Journal'sparent company Dow Jones, hailed the verdict.

"We continue to mourn Danny Pearl. And we continue to hope that everyone responsible for his kidnapping and murder will be brought to justice," Mr Goldstein said.

"Today's verdict is one step in that direction."
