A man has been convicted by a Dublin Circuit Criminal Court jury of having sex with his mentally impaired cousin.
The Dublin man (50) had pleaded not guilty to eight charges of having sex with a mentally impaired woman between 1998 and 2003.
The four-day trial heard evidence that the man told gardaí he was in a sexual relationship with his 44-year-old cousin but he had no knowledge that she had a “mental handicap”.
The woman gave evidence that the married man would have sex with her when she would travel from Cork to Dublin every year for a short holiday.
She said that after collecting her at the train station he would drive her to his family home where, after a vodka and cola, sex took place.
After less than two hours of deliberation, the jury returned a unanimous verdict of guilty on all eight charges.
Judge Patricia Ryan remanded the man on bail to appear before the court next month to fix a date for sentencing.
She also ordered that he be registered as a sex offender.
