A 19-year-old man from Cork has been given a life sentence for the murder of Nicola Sweeney at her home at Underwood House, Rochestown, Cork, in April.

Peter Whelan with an address at Ash Grove, Rochestown, was also sentenced to 15 years' imprisonment for the attempted murder of Sinead O'Leary on the same date.

He had pleaded guilty to both charges.

Mr Justice Carney said that given the horrific circumstances of the crime, the sentence should be consecutive.

Ms Sweeney died from extensive stab wounds to her body on April 27th this year after she was attacked while watching a video at her home with a friend, Ms Sinéad O'Leary, also aged 19, of Montenotte.
