A MAN in his 20s was in a critical condition in hospital yesterday following a double stabbing in a Cork suburb on Sunday night. A second man injured in the incident, which took pace at about 11.30pm at Innishmore Grove, Ballincollig, was in a stable condition in hospital.
The two men, aged 22 and 25, were taken to Cork University Hospital. One of them sustained four stab wounds after a row broke out in the normally quiet estate. He underwent emergency surgery at the hospital yesterday morning.
Gardaí are seeking witnesses to the altercation which took place on a road at the estate. It is understood a number of people were involved, and that a dispute prior to the event sparked the assaults.
“We are appealing to any witnesses who might have seen the incident, people that were in the area at the time, or anyone who witnessed a prelude to the incident, be that a disagreement or a dispute,” said Supt Con Cadogan, who is leading the investigation.
“Outside of the two injured individuals, we understand that there were a number of parties involved.”
A knife and another weapon, which gardaí did not wish to identify, were recovered from the scene. A number of other items connected to the assaults were also found.
Meanwhile in Limerick, a garda was hospitalised after gardaí were attacked by 15 youths in a south side estate. Up to 20 gardaí were required to back up colleagues who came under attack when they called to the scene of a criminal damage incident at Ballincurra Weston at 8.25pm on Sunday.
Rocks and missiles were fired during the attack and three people were arrested. An 18-year-old man and a male juvenile were later brought before Limerick District Court and charged with public order offences. They were remanded on bail to appear before the court at a later date.
One garda suffered an injury to his neck and was taken to the Midwestern Regional Hospital, where he was treated and discharged.
