A 24-year-old man appeared in court yesterday charged with the murder of a father-of-one at a house in Waterford city in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Patrick Murphy (27), a Co Dublin man who had been living locally for some years, died after he was stabbed at 42 The Glen, a private two-storey terrace house.

John Flaherty (24), Ard Daire in Ferrybank in the city, yesterday appeared at a special sitting of the District Court on a charge of murder.

Det Garda Donal Donohue said the accused was informed of the charge at 11.35pm on Sunday. He offered “no reply” at that time.

Judge Gerard Furlong said bail was not an option because of the seriousness of the charge. He granted Mr Flaherty, an unemployed man, free legal aid and remanded him to Cork Prison. He will appear at Waterford District Court on Friday.
