A 25-year-old man has been remanded in custody charged in connection with the fatal stabbing of his mother in Roscommon town.

A 25-year-old man has been remanded in custody charged in connection with the fatal stabbing of his mother in Roscommon town.

Paul Henry, with an address at the Spinney, Abbeytown, Roscommon town, appeared before Galway District Court this morning.

He is charged with assaulting his mother, Ann Henry (49), causing her harm, contrary to Section 3 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act, 1997, at The Spinney, Abbeytown, last Saturday afternoon.

Gda Ian Delaney of Roscommon Garda station gave evidence of arresting the accused at Abbeytown on Saturday and with charging him at 10.35pm last night.

The court heard that when the assault charge was put to him, Mr Henry said: “I’m pleading not guilty anyway”.

Brid Millar, for Mr Henry, said she had no objection to her client being remanded in custody. She said she was not making a bail application at this stage.

She applied for legal aid for Mr Henry, whom she said was unemployed and in receipt of €186 in social welfare payments per week.

Judge Mary Fahy remanded the accused in custody by consent to appear before Harristown District Court this Friday, September 23rd.
