A man died after the car he was driving hit a bridge at Kilmeena, near Newport, Co Mayo in the early hours of yesterday morning.

The victim was named as Jonathan Faul (25), a native of the Carrickmacross area of Co Monaghan, who had been living in Newport for some time.

Mr Faul died from his injuries after the car he was driving hit a bridge at Knocknaboley, Kilmeena, at about 1.45 am.

He was taken by ambulance to Mayo General Hospital in Castlebar and died there a short time later.

Mr Faul was the second young man in a week with connections to the Newport area to die in a road tragedy.

On Wednesday last, Brian Keane (25), Skirdagh, Newport, was killed near Belcarra, Castlebar, when his car hit a wall.
