A drive-by shooting in Belfast in which a 18-year-old teenager was injured this morning may be linked to a bitter family feud in the west of the city.

Wayne McComb (18) was shot in the leg as he walked along the Whiterock Road, shortly after 8am. It is understood his family moved out of the nearby Ballymurphy area last week after its home was attacked.

Local sources said the PSNI also warned the teenager that a death threat had been issued against him.

Wayne has been taken to the city's Royal Victoria Hospital, but his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Tensions have been running high in the Ballymurphy area since father-of-six Gerard Devlin was murdered last month. He was stabbed to death as he picked up his children in Whitecliff Parade.

There have been a number of arson attacks on homes and several death threats have been issued.

McComb's sister, Debbie (15), was knocked down and killed by a stolen car on the Springfield Road in March 2002.

Nationalist SDLP Policing Board member Alex Attwood appealed for calm following the shooting.

"All those involved must step back and the PSNI must step up to the mark of identifying and prosecuting anyone involved in this conflict. It will be difficult but people must try to be calm," the West Belfast Assembly member said.
