Low-fat wine makes dieters cheer

Dieters across Ireland will finally be able to enjoy a tipple while shedding the pounds.

Dieters across Ireland will finally be able to enjoy a tipple while shedding the pounds.

A white Riesling from Germany, sponsored by Weight Watchers because of its low fat content, is set to go on sale in off-licences and supermarkets throughout the country.

The wine is expected to fly off the shelves when tens of thousands of slimmers realise they can finally enjoy a few glasses without feeling guilty.

Distributors James Adams Vintners in Dublin say they are expecting the product to be a huge success. "The most common complaint that people dieting have is that they can't enjoy a drink," said Mr Frank Donegan, director of James Adams Vintners.

"Now we are giving them a solution to that. There are 100,000 people in Ireland who go to Weight Watchers regularly, so that is a lot of people feeling guilty about enjoying a drink.

"Now they won't have to. Weight Watchers operates on a points system, and basically the average slimmer would be allocated about 20 points per day.

"A bottle of this wine makes up about six points, which leaves plenty of room for a nice meal to go with it. And, of course, for the more restrained a glass is only one point."

Made in the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer region of Germany, one of the most northerly wine-producing regions in the world, the wine is made purely from Riesling grapes.

"Because of the cool climate, the wine is naturally lower in alcohol than other varieties but it has a really fresh and delicate taste," said Mr Donegan.
