A 38-year-old Drogheda man appeared before a special sitting of Mullingar District Court yesterday morning charged in relation to assaults on two gardaí hours earlier.

The man was alleged to have assaulted the female gardaí at about 3am on George’s Street, Drogheda, Co Louth. He faced a charge of assault contrary to section 2 of the Non Fatal Offences Against the Person Act in relation to each.

A Garda spokesman confirmed two gardaí suffered injuries and were taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital. One garda is believed to have received a blow to her face.

Meanwhile, gardaí are investigating the death of a Waterford teenager (18) who had travelled to Drogheda to attend a dance festival and took ill while there. He was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes hospital where he died a short time later.
